About the Home Improvement Grant Programme 

The Home Improvement Grant (HIG) Programme is part of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago’s comprehensive housing plan. The programme provides a maximum grant of TT$15,000 to assist eligible homeowners in carrying out essential home repairs and improvements. 
  
This initiative aims to improve living conditions, ensure structural integrity, and enhance safety and comfort for qualifying citizens. 

Who Is Eligible? 

To qualify for the Home Improvement Grant, applicants must meet the following criteria: 

Citizenship & Residency – Must be a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago and at least 21 years old.

Income Requirement – Household income must not exceed TT$5,000 per month. 

Proof of Tenure – Must provide one of the following: 

  • Deed or Certificate of Title in the applicant’s name. 
  • Signed letter of consent from co-owner (if property is jointly owned). 
  • Three years of rent receipts (if renting). 
  • Written permission from the property owner (with deed/title and owner’s ID). 
  • Certificate of Comfort & Land Settlement Agency Non-Objection Letter (if squatting). 

First-Time Beneficiaries – Applicants must not have previously benefited from any similar home improvement programme administered by the Ministry.

This is a grant, not a loan.

Government officials monitor the process to ensure repairs are completed properly. 

How to Apply for the Home Improvement Grant 

Step 1: Submit Your Application 

Applications must be submitted to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development’s database. 

A random draw is used to select prospective applicants. 

Step 2: Attend an Assessment Interview 

Selected applicants must attend an interview to verify their eligibility. 

Required documents include: 

  • Proof of income 
  • Proof of citizenship/residency 
  • Proof of property ownership or occupancy 
  • Detailed estimate of repair costs 

Step 3: Home Inspection & Approval 

A technical officer will visit the applicant’s premises to assess and approve the repair work. 

Step 4: Fund Disbursement 

Funds are disbursed in two tranches: 

  • 50% at the start of the repairs. 
  • 50% after half of the repairs have been satisfactorily completed
