About the Certificate of Immigration Status (CIS)

The Certificate of Immigration Status (CIS) is issued by the Immigration Division, Ministry of National Security of Trinidad and Tobago. It serves as official documentation confirming your citizenship or legal residency status in the country. 

 

This certificate includes your biographical data and details about how your status was acquired (e.g., by birth, descent, registration, or naturalisation). The CIS is often required for official matters such as legal processes, employment, or immigration-related applications.

Who Can Apply?

You should apply for a Certificate of Immigration Status if: 

You are a citizen or resident of Trinidad and Tobago. 

You need official documentary proof of your immigration status. 

You are a minor child of a citizen or resident and require documentation of your status. 

You resided in Trinidad and Tobago before 1976 and now need confirmation of that status.

How to Apply for a Certificate of Immigration Status (CIS)

Note: The Immigration Officer may request additional documents during the review process. 

Step 1: Complete the CIS Application Form 

  • Use BLOCK LETTERS and black or dark blue ink. 
  • Include your contact details, nationality, passport/ID number, and information on your parents (if applicable). 
  • Sign and date the declaration section. 

Step 2: Submit originals and copies of the following: 

  • Two recent passport-sized photographs 
  • Birth certificate 
  • Marriage, divorce, or death certificates (if applicable) 
  • Deed poll(s) for any name changes 
  • Current and previous passports/travel documents 
  • NIS contributions (if applicable) 
  • Three letters of recommendation (for adults), from T&T nationals with valid ID or passport 
  • Children’s birth certificates (if applicable) 
  • Parents’ immigration documents (if your status is derived from them) 

Step 3: Submit Your Application In-Person 

Visit the Immigration Division office to submit your application and documents. Interviews may be conducted to verify your information.

Step 4: Await Approval

If your application is approved, your Certificate of Immigration Status will be issued. You’ll be contacted when it is ready for collection.
