Drug and Alcohol Treatment Services

Drug addiction and alcoholism are common problems in Trinidad and Tobago.  The government has implemented a range of programmes designed to prevent and treat drug and alcohol abuse.  The Ministry of Health offers addiction treatment at a number of facilities throughout the country.  Treatment for drug and alcohol abuse is offered free of charge to all citizens.

How do I access drug and alcohol treatment services?

If you have a drug or alcohol problem, please visit one of the health facilities listed in the following section.  You do not need to make an appointment, and assessment and treatment are free.  You can also enrol in an Alcoholics Anonymous programme.  Please call (868) 679-0066 to find an Alcoholics Anonymous group near you.  More severe cases of substance abuse are treated at the Substance Abuse and Prevention Centre at the Caura Hospital.

How long does treatment for substance abuse last?

The duration of treatment varies depending on the progress of the individual patient and the location where the treatment is administered.  Evaluation before treatment takes approximately one hour.  Treatment usually lasts from two to six weeks.  There is a mandatory six-week treatment programme at the Substance Abuse and Prevention Centre.  Please note that many patients who are addicted to drugs or alcohol require life-long support to stay sober.
