Respiratory Diseases

Respiratory diseases are a leading cause of illness and death in Trinidad and Tobago. The Respiratory Diseases Programme is a major component of the Government's commitment to address this public health challenge. The Respiratory Disease Programme seeks to decrease the rate of infection and reduce the number of illnesses and deaths from respiratory diseases by focusing on prevention and treatment.  The Programme provides treatment for the following illnesses:

  • Tuberculosis.
  • Management of core infectious TB/HIV.
  • Asthma.
  • Pneumonia.
  • Bronchitis - acute and chronic.
  • Lung cancer.
  • Emphysema.
  • Fibrosis.
  • Chest trauma.

Who can access respiratory disease care and treatment?

All citizens of Trinidad and Tobago are entitled to respiratory disease care and treatment free of charge.  Non-citizens must pay for treatment.  Please note that you must be referred by a doctor before you can access treatment for respiratory diseases.  Please visit your local health centre or your doctor for more information.  You must bring one form of national identification when you are referred for treatment.
