Micro Enterprise Loan Facility
The Micro Enterprise Loan (MEL) Facility, managed by Ministry of the People and Social Development and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), offers assistance to under-privileged persons who wish to establish a micro business but are unable to do so due to limited financial resources. This service is administered by various community-based organisations in a professional, personalised and supportive atmosphere. Persons applying for this facility are offered assistance in business plan development as well as training in entrepreneurial skills. A maximum loan of TT$10,000.00 is available.
Who can apply?
Applicants for the Micro Enterprise Loan (MEL) facility must be:
- 18 years or older.
- In receipt of public assistance or other forms of social support.
- Earning at subsistence level or minimum wage, or unemployed.
- Living within five miles of a community-based organisation offering this programme.
A list of organisations that offer MEL funding is included in the following section. Individuals who do not reside within a five-mile radius of any of the organisations listed below may wish to consider some of the other micro-enterprise funding programmes offered by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. How do I apply?
To apply for a Micro-Enterprise Loan, you must pick up an application form from the nearest community-based organization listed below. Completed forms should be returned to the same office. Please remember that you must live within five miles of the office to qualify for assistance. You must have an idea for a business and relevant skills and experience to apply.
The organisations listed below administer the Micro Enterprise Loan Facility. Opening hours for these offices are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday except public holiday.

What documents do I need?
The following documents should be presented with the application form:
- One valid form of national identification (ID card, driver's permit, passport).
- Certificates of qualifications or skills acquired.

What fees do I need to pay?
Successful applicants are required to pay a loan processing fee of two percent of the loan amount. Applicants can also access assistance to develop a business plan for a fee of TT$5.00.

Community-based organisations that would like to offer the Micro Enterprise Loan Facility to residents of their community are encouraged to contact the Research Unit of the Ministry of the People and Social Development .
