Joining the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment (Army)


The Trinidad and Tobago Regiment is an arm of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, which falls under the purview of the Ministry of National Security.  The mission of the Regiment is "to contribute to the maintenance of a safe and secure environment for the well being of the people of Trinidad and Tobago, and to assist in the promotion of hemispheric and international security and development, with a well equipped force, trained in a broad range of disciplines and actively involved in community development". As a member of the Regimental team, you will play a key role in supporting this mission.  




Who is eligible to join?

Any citizen of Trinidad and Tobago who meets the qualifications for a particular post is eligible to join the Regiment.  Posts include Regular Commissioned Officers, Short Service Commissioned Officers (who are hired for specific, short-term assignments) and Other Ranks.
 
Applicants for the post of Regular Commissioned Officer must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age but no older than 25 years of age.
  • Possess at least five Ordinary (O) Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science Subject.
  • Possess at least two Advanced (A) Level subjects.

Applicants for the post of Short Service Commissioned Officer must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age but no older than 43 years of age.
  • Possess at least five Ordinary (O) Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science Subject.
  • Possess at least two Advanced (A) Level subjects. 

Applicants for the post of Other Rank must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be no older than 35 years of age if applying to the Engineering Corps or no older than 25 years of age if applying for any other position.
  • Possess evidence of completion of secondary-level education.
  • If applying to the Engineering Corps, also possess at least a National Craftsman's Certificate or its equivalent.
  • If applying as a Cook or Steward, also possess evidence of formal training from a recognised institution.

What is the recruitment process?

The recruitment process has several steps.  It begins with the Regiment publishing media advertisements for selection sessions.  Session dates, times and locations will be included in the advertisements.  You must attend a selection session if you are interested in joining the Regiment.  You must bring the original and one copy of each of the following to the session:

  • Birth Certificate with supporting affidavit, if necessary.
  • Proof of identification in the form of a valid Trinidad and Tobago Passport, Driver's Permit or National ID card.
  • Police Certificate of Character issued not more than three months before Selection.  Follow the link below for information on obtaining a Certificate of Character.
  • Proof of educational qualifications.
All selected applicants must take an entrance examination and undergo both medical and fitness evaluations.  Applicants who successfully complete the recruitment process will be required to complete 14 weeks of Basic Training.

Are there any associated fees?

You may incur some minimal costs to undergo the medical check that is required before the start of recruit training.
