Joining the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service


The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service is committed to the protection of society and the prevention of crime.  As a member of the Prison Service team, you will play a key role in rehabilitating offenders while maintaining control of inmates under safe, secure and humane conditions.




Who is eligible to join?

You must be a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago and meet the following qualifications to join the Prison Service :  

  • At least 19 years of age but no more than 35 years of age as of the date of recruitment.
  • Possess a minimum of three Ordinary (O) Level subjects including English (CXC General Proficiency grade 1, 2 or 3; CXC Basic Proficiency grade 1; or GCE grade A, B or C) and any other two subjects (CXC General Proficiency grade 1, 2 or 3; CXC Basic Proficiency grade 1 or 2; or GCE grade A, B or C).
  • Be a minimum height of 169 cm, if male, or 163 cm, if female.

What is the recruitment process?

The recruitment process has several steps.  The Prison Service publishes advertisements for selection sessions.  Selection dates, times and locations will be included in the advertisements.  If you are interested in joining the Prison Service, you must attend a selection session and bring the original and one copy of each of the following:

 

  • Birth Certificate with supporting affidavit, if necessary.
  • Proof of identification in the form of a valid Trinidad and Tobago Passport, Driver's Permit or National ID card.
  • Police Certificate of Character issued not more than three months before Selection.  Follow the link below for information on how to obtain a Police Certificate of Character.
  • Proof of educational qualifications.
  • Two letters of recommendation written not more than three months before Selection.

If you are selected, you must attend a preliminary interview and complete an employment application form that will be provided at the interview.  If you are successful at the preliminary interview, you must write the Prison Service Entrance Examination, which is set by the Service Commissions Department.  After successful completion of the Examination, you must attend a final interview and complete an employment application form that will be provided at the interview.  All candidates successful at the final interview will be placed on an Order of Merit List. 

 

When vacancies occur, candidates will be contacted in the order in which they appear on the Order of Merit List to undergo a medical and other background checks.  If successful, you will be placed in recruit training for a period of approximately four to six months.

Are there any associated fees?

Candidates may incur some minimal costs to undergo the medical check that is required before beginning recruit training.
