Inspection, Certification and Licensing of Wiremen


To ensure the safety of the public, the Government Electrical Inspectorate certifies that wiremen carrying out electrical installations are qualified and capable to perform such work.  Licences are issued to wiremen as verification of their certification.




Am I eligible for certification?

Qualified and practicing electricians are invited to apply for certification by the Government Electrical Inspectorate.

How do I apply?

To become a licensed wireman, applicants are required to apply to the head office of the Electrical Inspectorate:

An Application Form for a Wireman's Licence can be obtained from the office above.  Completed forms must be submitted along with the documents and fees listed in the following sections.  Applicants from Tobago are also required to apply at the head office in Trinidad.

What documents do I need?

  • Three current passport-sized photographs.
  • National Identification Card.
  • Valid Driver's Permit.
  • BIR File Number (income tax file number).
  • Technical certificates such as a City and Guilds Diploma, National Examination Council (NEC).
  • Certificate or Engineering Degree.
  • Wireman's licence number (for renewals).
  • Two letters of recommendation from licensed wiremen or current and previous employers.

What fees do I need to pay?

A fee of TT$100.00 is to be paid upon submission of your application.  Please note that payments can be made between the hours of 8:30 am and 12:00 pm and from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, Monday to Friday, except public holidays.

How does the application process work?

Applications are processed within seven working days.  The documents submitted are assessed and applicants are invited to sit an examination.  The examination results are reviewed and the candidates are interviewed by a representative of the Electrical Inspectorate.  Successful applicants are contacted and are required to collect the licence in person from the head office.  The entire process can be completed within a two-month period.
 
The Wireman's Licence is valid for two years and must be renewed at the end of this period.
