Reporting Accidents at Sea


Any accident or casualty that occurs in the territorial waters of Trinidad and Tobago must be reported to the Maritime Services Division of the Ministry of Works and Transport.  Reportable incidents include collisions at sea, missing vessels or crew, fire, foundering, loss of life or injury to crew members or passengers.




How do I report an accident?

The Master, owner, operator or agent of the vessel must complete and submit a Report of a Shipping Casualty form as soon as possible after an accident.  This form can be downloaded using the link below or picked up from the Maritime Services Division office.  The form records information such as the nature of the casualty; name, number and registry of the ship; location of the accident; and probable cause.  Failure to report an accident is an offence and carries a fine of $TT1000.00.

The completed form must be returned to the Maritime Services Division by fax, email or hand delivery.

Do I have to pay a fee?

There is no cost to report an accident at sea.  However, failure to report an accident is an offence that carries a fine of $TT1,000.00.
