Prime Minister's Awards for Innovation and Invention


The Prime Minister's Awards for Innovation and Invention is a biennial competition that recognises Trinidadian and Tobagonian innovators and inventors.  The awards acknowledge and reward individuals who demonstrate innovative thinking, especially in the arena of science and technology.  The awards are administered by The National Institute for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST).  Awards are presented to competitors in each of the following categories:

  • The Innovation and Invention Junior Division, for entrants nine to 17 years old.
  • The Innovation and Invention Senior Division, for entrants 18 years and older.
  • The Design Challenge Junior Division, for entrants nine to 17 years old.
  • The Design Challenge Senior Division, for entrants 18 years and older.



Can I register to compete?

You can register to compete in the competition if you:

  • Are a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago or a legal resident of at least three years.
  • Are between the ages of nine and 17 years old, if entering a Junior Division.
  • Are 18 years or older, if entering a Senior Division.
  • Meet all other eligibility requirements for the competition category in which you are entering.

How do I register?

NIHERST will publish media advertisements providing information on where you can obtain the Official Regulations several months before the start of the competition.  The Official Regulations include details about the registration process and entry requirements for each category of the competition.  The competition is held every two years.  You may direct questions regarding the registration process to the office below, which is open Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, except public holidays.

What happens after I am registered to compete?

A panel of judges reviews all the entries received by the due date and determines those that qualify to proceed to Phase Two of the competition.  All entrants are then contacted and informed of the status of their entry — whether they qualified or not.

Are there any associated fees?

There are no fees for any part of the competition.
